It was nearly nine o’clock by the time the fire was conquered to Morgan’s satisfaction, and the men, beaten and weary, loaded into the buggy, each speculating how bad Jeremy’s injury was. How long it’d take for him to get better. When he’d be back on the line—if he’d be back on the line, or if he’d have to go home to recuperate.

For his part, Morgan could hardly think about Jeremy’s injury itself. He thought instead about the boy who had showed up at his door, years before, unbidden. At the time, he’d thought the move foolish. But as the years passed, he’d begun to view it differently. He’d seen it as an act of bravery. Jeremy was young and afraid and with good reason, but he’d done something about it. It was silly and had a ninety-nine-to-one chance of failing and making his life worse. But there was that one-in-a-hundred chance it’d work out, and the boy had the stones to roll the dice.

Just as he’d done this summer.

Morgan had been critical of him—confused when the kid couldn’t hardly pack his bag even and, when he proposed bullshit strategy to fight fire when he knew, he knew, better—but Morgan had lost sight of a basic truth, one that came back to him with the full force of a tidal wave: The boy had trusted him, and in so doing, set out to perform a job not one in a thousand is fit for. And what good had it done him?

After Hawks dropped the rest of the men off at the Ruby Mountain base camp, he said to Morgan, “Well, let’s go see the booger.”
